Liturgical Music

In 2013 Carlos Zapién was appointed Director of Music of the Cathedral of Saint Augustine in Tucson, Arizona. In this capacity, he directs both the Cathedral and Diocesan Choirs. Prior to his arrival to the United States of America, from 2006 until 2013 he was the Director of Music for Catholic Services at The Most Holy Trinity Catholic Community at USAG Stuttgart, Germany. He has served as organist at the Catedral del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús and the Catedral de la Inmaculada Concepción in Ciudad Obregón and Mazatlán, respectively, and he taught music at the Seminario Franciscano de la Provincia Fray Junípero Serra. Carlos Zapién is an active composer of liturgical music, having composed the Mass of the Most Holy Trinity and the Misa al Sagrado Corazón de Jesús.

He earned a Bachelor and Master of Music Degrees from the University of Oregon where she studied piano with Victor Steinhardt and voice with Eric Mentzel. He studied organ with José Carmen Saucedo at the Conservatorio de las Rosas and received the Solistenklasse diploma from the Staatliche Musikhochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Stuttgart where he studied voice under the direction of world-class tenor Francisco Araiza and Dunja Vejzovic. He has concertized in his native Mexico, Austria, Germany, Italy, Taiwan and the U.S.A. In year 2009 he was a member of the Opera Studio at the Staatsoper Stuttgart, where he sung operatic roles until year 2012. He is the founder and director of Ars Vocalis México an international festival/academy focused on vocal music.
